Newsflash

While flea and tick season is almost over here in New England, it may not be over wherever you are. Also, simply because it is getting colder does not mean your pets are no longer at risk. Quite the opposite. Fleas, and ticks can often lay dormant for some time. If you live in areas that are prone to wild animals, lots of woods or shrubs, then make sure you protect your pets at least until December. Those tickls that are still hanging around might have been on another animal, and trust me they would love to come inside to a nice warm dog every night.

Even with tick medications, your pet may still get ticks on them. Most tick medications only affect the tick after a day or two. Understand that these medications are absorbed by your pets skin, and then become toxic to ticks after they have bitten in.

One of the best things to do is to remove any ticks you find as soon as you find them. Since there are many potential issues involved with taking a tick off your pet, the quicker and easier it is to do, the better. I know my dogs will squirm around trying to figure out what I am doing, and with two pets the other one is always in the way. This makes it difficult at best to get stuff done.

Luckily there is a very fast and simple solution

Tick Removal Tools

Tick Removal tool for dogs and cats

. As you can see by the picture, a tick removal tool does not look like anything special. However, this is not the case.

While it may look simple, what it does will save you a lot of time and effort. With this simple tick tool, all you need to do is find the tick, slide the prongs to either side of the tick bite, and gently twist until the tick comes off.

One really nice thing is that you never need to touch the tick. It even stays gripped in the prongs until you can remove it with a tissue.

With this tool you can remove a tick in a matter of seconds, even with the most curious or fidgety of dogs. Try doing this with tweezers and your going to make a mess, damage the tick, and likely not even ge the entire tick removed.

This tool costs all of a couple dollars at your local pet store. If your dogs are running around outside, especially near wooded areas, then get two of them. If your like us you will misplace (not lose) the first one.
